Vereinigte Staaten: banking for non-residents and digital nomads. Vereinigte Staaten is outside the EU where, for a foreigner, accounts open with some effort — sometimes without setting foot in the country. Most banks work mainly with local and regional clients, so it pays to come prepared with proof of address, source-of-funds evidence and a clear account purpose.
Opening an account and going remote. The account can usually be opened remotely, online or by video identification; some applicants confirm opening remotely or online; others note an in-person branch visit was still required; EMI and fintech accounts (e.g. Wise, Revolut) are a lighter-touch fallback for everyday spending and currency exchange.
Reporting, AML and stability. Vereinigte Staaten is not part of CRS automatic exchange, so account data is not auto-reported to your tax home — but you must still declare it where you are tax-resident; it is not on the FATF/EU AML high-risk lists, so onboarding follows standard due-diligence rather than enhanced scrutiny; political and economic stability is rated medium (World Bank governance indicators), which shapes the risk of capital controls, abrupt banking-rule changes or currency turmoil affecting your account.
What applicants report. What people brought: Valid passport or ID, Email address, Must be eligible for USAA membership (military, veterans, or family), Passport, Credit or debit card with same name, Tello bill or proof of US address (not strictly verified), Foreign bank statement for W-8BEN, Foreign TIN for W-8BEN. practical tips from the community: Use Wise for receiving client payments in USD — clients see US bank details; Combine Wise with Stripe for invoicing; Set up a Wise multi-currency account to hold and convert USD, EUR, GBP; If you have USAA eligibility, it's one of the most expat-friendly options available; Bring a Tello bill with a US address even if they don't check it — just having a US address to state verbally was enough; Open a secured credit card at the same time to start building credit history. Treat this as community orientation, not a guarantee.
Bottom line. Banking access in Vereinigte Staaten is workable but uneven, so come prepared and keep a backup; an EMI like Wise or Revolut covers everyday needs while a local account is arranged. Note that non-CRS status does not remove your duty to declare the account where you are tax-resident.
